Sunday September 12, 2010, 10am - 4pm.
Sustainable House Day is a national event and is a symbol of growing consciousness in saving power and not wasting our resources.
“We have seen a dramatically increased interest in the benefits of domestic energy production and efficiency. People want to live more sustainably but don’t always know where to start.” said COOLmob Project Manager, Robin Knox.
“On Sustainable House Day, ordinary people will open their own homes to the public and show how they live comfortably in the tropics while being energy efficient. “
“Not all of these homes are purpose built showcase homes either. Most look just like every other home in the street - until you walk inside. There is nothing better than talking to people who have already made the change. You can learn about what works and what doesn’t.” said Robin.
“Visitors will see features such as ridge ventilation, passive cooling options, reuse of grey water, solar power, efficient pool management, delicious food gardens and more.”
This year’s open houses are;-
· 9 Gove St Alawa
· 10 Walker St Nightcliff
· 33 Hazel Ct Coconut Grove
· 31 Price Rd Girraween
· 184 Marjerrison Dr Humpty Doo
· 325 Darwin River Rd Darwin River.
House entry is FREE. The community can self-drive, car pool or catch the COOLmob Tour Bus from Nightcliff Woolworth’s Bus Stop at 12:30pm for $10. Bookings for the tour bus are essential and can be made by phoning 8981 2532..
“There will be a wide variety of sustainable living tips on display at the houses. The aim is to motivate, and provide information so people can go home and start implementing some of the basics straight away.” Robin concluded.
