The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) has re-opened Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park for swimming and canoeing.

Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife chief district ranger Kristen Appel said Katherine Gorge usually re-opens for swimming near the start of the dry season however late wet season rains and high water levels delayed the opening.

“The water levels have now dropped to a safe level and the clarity of the water has improved,” Ms Appel said.

“Extensive surveys including aerial surveys have been carried out to ensure no estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles are present in the system before we open for swimming.

“We will continue to undertake regular surveys throughout the dry season in addition to two traps set within the Gorge.”

The public are reminded that estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles can be found in freshwater systems and may enter areas undetected.

To report estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sightings in the Darwin region phone 0419 822 859 or in the Katherine region phone 0407 958 405.

NRETAS urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real, so don’t risk your life. For more information go to www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise
