The Territory Government has  welcomed a new Volgren bus into its Darwin Bus Service fleet.

Member for Fannie Bay Michael Gunner said the new Euro 5 standard bus was the 3000th bus to be manufactured by Volgren in Dandenong and arrived ahead of next Monday’s Darwin Cup.

“Another new environmentally friendly Volgren bus is good news for the Territory environment,” Mr Gunner said.

“It will be one of 26 buses giving an estimated 5500 Territorians a free lift after a top day at the Darwin Cup races next Monday.

“Territorians love the Darwin Cup, it gets a huge crowd and we want to make sure people can get to and from the track safely and we reduce traffic around the track.

“That’s why we put on free buses at great events like the Darwin Cup.

“The new bus will be on our roads for the next 15 years providing cleaner, greener public transport and each of our 33 Volgren buses do a top job, travelling a combined 1.5 million kilometres a year.

“We are constantly improving our public transport - that’s why we have a continual investment in greener buses - and are building demand by making it free for all seniors, students, pensioners and carers and are putting in new and better bus stops.”

Volgren Managing Director Peter Dale said: “These vehicles are at the leading edge of modern technology with our lightweight aluminium structure, air-conditioning and attention to passenger comfort and safety.

“Volgren also provides the benefit of reduced whole of life costs with the vehicles able to meet the harsh operating conditions of the Territory.

“These buses will ensure that all Territorians will travel in the most economical and reliable buses available in the market today.”
