The first and second gorges in Nitmiluk National Park are temporarily closed for swimming and canoeing following the sighting of an estuarine (saltwater) crocodile in the second gorge on Saturday, 24 July 2010.
Parks and Wildlife Chief District Ranger for Nitmiluk National Park, Kristen Appel said that a night survey carried out on Saturday night confirmed the presence of an estuarine crocodile believed to be approximately 2 metres.
“Following the sighting, the first and second gorges of the Nitmiluk National Park have been temporarily closed for swimming and canoeing,” Ms Appel said.
“A crocodile trap is already in place in the first gorge and an additional trap was placed in the second gorge on Sunday, 26 July 2010.
“The Crocodile Management Team will be heading to the area tonight to try to capture the crocodile.
“We will advise the public once the crocodile has been successfully captured and the gorges reopen for swimming and canoeing.”
Also today a 3.6 metre male estuarine (saltwater) crocodile was removed from a crocodile trap located in the Katherine River at Taylor’s Park, 45 kilometres downstream of the Katherine township.
This is the second crocodile caught in the area with a 2.1 metre male estuarine crocodile removed from the same trap last week.
The public are reminded that estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles can be found in freshwater systems and may enter areas undetected.
The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real, so don’t risk your life.
