Acting Minister for Sport and Recreation Gerry McCarthy has announced elite Twenty20 Cricket would be coming to the Top End this year.

“Territorians love their cricket, and today I am pleased to announce that this August, in a first for the NT, world class Twenty20 Cricket will be coming to Darwin,” said Mr McCarthy.

Fresh from dominating this year’s ‘KFC Big Bash’ Twenty20 competition, the Victorian Bushrangers will play fellow finalists the South Australian Redbacks, and cricket heavyweights the Queensland Bulls in a triangular series.

“The series will showcase the new and exciting format of Twenty 20 Cricket at TIO Stadium, with Victoria and SA playing their final games on their way to South Africa for the multi-million dollar Champions League Twenty20 tournament."

Mr McCarthy said the tournament is another example of NT Government’s commitment to both Cricket players and fans.

“The NT Strike showed at this year’s Australian Country Cricket Championships just how strong NT Cricket has become; the recently announced $3m overhaul of the Marrara Cricket Grounds will allow these talented players to train year-round, as well as attract more world class teams like these ones.”

NT Cricket CEO Andrew Ramsay said that this series represents an important opportunity for cricket in the NT.

“Twenty20 cricket is one of the world’s fastest growing sports.  It’s great fun for all the family and we are very excited that world class Twenty20 cricket is coming to the Top End in 2010."

Mr McCarthy was also optimistic for the future of cricket in the NT.

“Darwin’s perfect weather, excellent pitches and top facilities have put us in the box seat to attract more elite cricket and this Twenty20 tournament is just the beginning,” said Mr McCarthy.

“With the growth of Twenty20 cricket in Asia, there are huge opportunities for Darwin as a winter training base, and to potentially attract Champions League and IPL matches in the future.”
